March 08, 2016 Sunset Drive

Brent Leo Smith is back from leave to start the sunset drive, he has Jeandré Gerding on camera. Woo-hoo! I've missed his hyper, happy personality!

Brent,

(2016/03/08 16:01) With a breeding herd of Elephants near the Djuma pan. He tells us there are two school classes watching which I love to hear, It is such a great idea for students to watch this, ask questions and learn early to love animals.

We get a good afternoon greeting from Jamie Paterson with Dazzling Dave on camera.

Brent

  • 2016/03/08 17:16 Beautiful sky view.
  • 2016/03/08 17:25 Impala

 Jamie,
(2016/03/08 17:28) Jamie tells us that, while not live, she drives around a blind corner and surprises a large Male Lion he was so close that he was right at her door. It startled all of them the humans and the Lion, so the Lion, which is probably a member of the Birmingham boys coalition ran off.  However she still has him in sight and is following closely but cautiously since he seems anxious. She is driving through the bush which is loud with all the trees and such so she sends us back to Brent until she relocates the Lion.

Brent,

  • Wonderful Sun rays shining through the clouds I love the amazing sky views we get almost as good as the animals, personally better than some animals but not many. Ha-Ha
  • 2016/03/08 17:32  Elephant for a second literally, I got a screenshot of it before we cut to Jamie but it's just not worth sharing.

Jamie,
We get rushed back to Jamie who is in a clearing following the large male lion, who goes up to an area and beings to investigate then dig. Jamie discusses which male is could be and comes to the conclusion it must be a Birmingham boy he was just on a mission to find the source of a smell and not really an nervous of the vehicle as she thought. Still she is wisely cautious and moves closer in short intervals. We watch him for a while before he finally pulls out an already dead and very bad smelling, but undamaged carcass of a warthog.

Normally I prefer to let WildEarth archives be the source of video clips but for a great sightings like this I made one to share, cutting out a bit to shorten it.

Enjoy! 3-08-16 Sunset Drive. Male Lion. Video (Part 1)
(2016/03/08 18:18) The lion gets up and considers what to do and decides to walk away.

Brent,
(2016/03/08 18:21) A Hippo out of the water drinking from the nearby pan at Sydney's dam.

Jamie,
(2016/03/08 18:23) Is still with the awesomely huge male lion that is now posing for pictures, and giving himself a little cleaning. Then @18.26 he hears something and gets up to investigate. We see, after Jamie moves the vehicle, that it's a few of the Nkuhuma lionesses approaching. Since "Big boy" won't share the carcass that he doesn't even want, one of the lioness goes to where the warthog was buried and begins to dig.

Brent,
(2016/03/08 18:32) At the Aubrey road Hyena Den with 11 different hyenas, including the cubs. It is already dark and screenshots are too dark. We don't stay long then we are sent back to Jamie with the lions.

Jamie,
(2016/03/08 18:35)  At first the lioness are all four drinking. Once done drinking they get up and walk off. Jamie follows thinking they maybe going to hunt. She hears from FC (final Control) that Stef and James heard roaring near camp and the Djuma cam area so they are headed out to see which lion is around. Brent is also on his way to that area.

Brent,
(2016/03/08 18:50) Near Djuma waterhole Brent is with the fifth Nkuhuma lioness, who is roaring to find her pride. As we know they are to the south with Jamie. It's very windy and with the wind blowing North at her, the rest of the pride won't hear her. Jamie is with the others and doesn't hear the roars. She continues to walk roar, lay down roar more until then end of drive.
