March 7, 2016 Sunset Drive

This afternoon we start with James Hendry and his cheery greeting with Bryan Joubert on camera. There is a plethora of animals within sight of the Djuma waterhole.
  • (2016/03/07 16:02) Zebra stallion and his kinship group
  • Elephant a ways off behind the waterhole
  • Buffalo bachelor group
  • Nyala
  • Kudu
Good afternoon from Jamie Paterson our presenter on the second vehicle today with Wium Dornbrack on camera. Her plan is to search more for the lions some more this afternoon hopefully with less tick bites then earlier this morning, and more lions.

  • (2016/03/07 16:14) Impala
  • (2016/03/07 16:18) A breading herd of buffalo of only four.
  • (2016/03/07 16:22) Two nervous Zebra they run when Jamie gets close.
  • (2016/03/07 16:24) Warthogs
James tells us that elephant near the waterhole was the elephant that harassed Scott the other day with the hole in its ear.

  • (2016/03/07 16:34) Impala males probably a year old.
  • (2016/03/07 16:36) Elephants. James says probably about 25 all around him, although can't see them all.
A "gremlin" apparently attacks James' vehicle and makes Bryan's camera squeal then go black.

Jamie, (2016/03/07 16:43)
  • (2016/03/07 16:50) Crested Barbet
James,
  • (2016/03/07 16:53) Explains the tech issue. He says that somehow the camera started to play back old footage from its memory and then power cut. He is still with the Elephants a wonderful large herd. I took a lot of screenshots I just love the elephants.
Jamie,
  • (2016/03/07 17:04) has a small leopard tortoise, the size of the palm of her hand and as long as her finger.
James,
  • (2016/03/07 17:05) Still with the fabulous large elephant herds. James counts the elephants all around and only counts fifteen so not as large a herd as he thought; personally I think 5 would be a lot.
  • (2016/03/07 17:10) The herd is starting to move off. We get several views of an approximately 2 year old calf suckling.
  • (2016/03/07 17:15) Two young calves come near the vehicle as if curious and bored. Not far behind them their mother comes and takes a sand bath about two meters or 6 feet from the vehicle. The dust is covering James and Bryan. This has been an amazing elephant sighting I am really enjoying it. Extremely relaxing.
Jamie,
  • (2016/03/07 17:27) Waterbuck calf so young and cute
James,
  •  (2016/03/07 17:29) A little clash of the titans for a minute between two young elephant bulls.
  • (2016/03/07 17:51) Still with James and the elephants.
Jamie,
  • (2016/03/07 17:53)  Nyala herd
  • (2016/03/07 18:02) A female Kudu is headed into the area of the Nyala herd. She gets close to the Nyala and we see a size comparison the kudu is almost twice the size of the female Nyala.
James,
  • (2016/03/07 18:07) James at The Aubrey's road Hyena Den
  • (2016/03/07 18:07) Only one sleeping hyena is home. Not sure who it is yet.
  • (2016/03/07 18:09) A second hyena walks in; after a minute or so we see it is Corky - A high ranking female who has a history of hanging around with Madam. Her mother is unknown.
  • (2016/03/07 18:13) We see, once James is done moving the vehicle for a better view, that the other hyena has gotten up and it is Madam - the Matriarch of the clan, mother to Bela 1 year old (not present) and the January 2016 twins.
  • (2016/03/07 18:15) Once corky has relaxed a bit and checked the area for threats, the D-twins (Corky's twins born around first week in December 2015) stick their heads out and decide it is safe to come out and greet mommy. November - Cub born to Pretty the high ranking female (not present) who was born around the first week in November 2015, comes out a hole behind the one they do. Then and the J-Twins (January 2016 twins) come out right after and there is a greeting. I took as always a lot of pictures to many probably but I want clear shots and they are all so cute. We get lots of J-twins close ups, curious little buggers.
Jamie,
  • (2016/03/07 18:22) Jamie with kudu who disappear towards the drainage line into the sunset.
  • (2016/03/07 18:26) Waterbuck male he sniffs a female and does a Flehmen grimace response for us.
James,
  • (2016/03/07 18.28) Back at the hyena den. J-twin cubs and madam, then November greeting madam.
  • (2016/03/07 18:32) both the December twins and the January twins have now laid down for their evening suckle and November goes back in the den. It is starting to get quite dark now.
  • (2016/03/07 18.36) James is leaving den so sends us back to Jamie
Jamie,
  • (2016/03/07 18:36) with her spotlight out now scanning the trees and bush for eyes. She explains a lot of using the spot light and night time viewing.
James,
  • (2016/03/07 18:46) has found a young hyena laying down with his spot light.
  • (2016/03/07 18:50) scrub hare
Jamie,
  • (2016/03/07 18:53) Bushbaby Took screenshots, lots of jumping from tree to tree great Job wium.
  • (2016/03/07 18:57) Fiery necked Nightjar in road
Jamie says her good nights.

James says his good nights.

End of Drive.
