March 17, 2016 Sunrise Drive

This morning we start the drive and day with the beautiful bright blue eyes of Jamie Paterson with Wium Dornbrack on camera. She finds the Nkuhuma lion pride before she even finishes with her morning introduction. What a great way to start the morning. The lions are sleeping.

(2016/03/17 05:42) Good morning from Brent and Dave who are with the cheeky huge elephant bull with the hole in his ear, however now he is fully in musth. This is the same elephant bull that harassed Scott's vehicle on March 2,2016 and Tara Pirie's on Feb 8, 2016. Brent watched his behavior very closely and there was a bit of a confrontation, Brent had to slap the side of the vehicle making a loud noise; a few times too ward him off. The video below is the incident which I feel Brent handled wonderfully teaching the elephant that behavior is bad. After we move on Brent talks a bit about the elephant and his behavior it is a great explanation.

Jamie,
  • (2016/03/17 05:51) The Nkuhuma pride is all still sleeping. One does roll over in the cutest way but that is about it.

  • (2016/03/17 05:59) Guineafowl walk right past the lions sleeping and don’t even alarm call.

   Brent,

  • (2016/03/17 06:10) Brent red backed shriek

  • (2016/03/17 06:18) Brent shows us the drain pipe that was Karula's den for her two new cubs a week or two back before the rain.

  • (2016/03/17 06:23) A line of ants crossing the road. Brent asked us to send him screenshots of them so he can identify what type of ants these are.

  • (2016/03/17 06:25) Impala herd. One large male chases off a younger one because they are rutting or about to be, and he wants the females to his self.

  • (2016/03/17 07:48) Something startled the impala a herd runs near Brent and there is monkey alarm calling too. After a radio call to Jamie he thinks it is one of the lioness gone off from the others.

Jamie,

  • (2016/03/17 07:52)The Nkuhuma lioness are all back near Jamie.

Brent,

  • (2016/03/17 08:02) Brent is now with Jamie and the lions so we now have two vehicles in the sighting for different views.

For the remainder of the drive we go back and forth between the two vehicles seeing different views of the Nkuhuma pride.

One lioness finds another smaller Speke's hinge-back tortoise and messes with it.

There is a few moments of allogrooming.

Jamie says her goodbyes

We spend our last few minutes with Brent and two of the Nkuhuma lioness grooming each other.
