March 20, 2016 Sunset Drive

     Good afternoon from Jamie Paterson with Wium Dornbrack on camera. Wium has suggested that we have a Dr. Seuss theme since the other vehicle, again has been invaded by gremlins and is in to see the doctors. Two of the Birmingham boys crossed into our area straight through twin dams then right across our southern boundary and laid down just 100 meters out of our area, just where we can't see them. Two others are with three of the Styx pride females to the west of that around Hoffman's and Tingana is over that way as well.

  • (2016/03/20 16:05) Buffalo one with a Yellow-billed oxpecker on his shoulder.We move a bit closer so we can see the oxpecker digging in his shoulder would that we have seen before seems a bit deeper now. We get several good views of Red-billed oxpeckers and some juveniles as well who have black bills.

     (2016/03/20 16:28) Elephants in dense vegetation, a tiny baby around 200 lbs is in the herd. Probably less then six months old or so, still only drinking milk from mom, not old enough to be eating grass yet, and at the adorable stage of learning to use its trunk better.

The female is about 35 years old judging by her temples being dented and size.  Another youngster is about 2 years older than the calf so about 2 1/2 years old.

(2016/03/20 16:41) Jamie is headed to Buffelshoek dam.

 `````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
 `````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
Jamie,
     She tells us since Brent's signal is so bad she will head over to the surprise animal in case Brent doesn’t have signal once it's our turn to get into the sighting.
(2016/03/20 17:34) Louise from FC (final control) has a question. Why are certain snakes equipped with such potent venom, when their prey is generally something so small. Why is their venom so strong it could kill a elephant etc... I thought wow great question so I recorded the answer which goes into a very interesting 4 minute talk. The video is too long to put here on the blog so here is a link to it. 3-20-16 Sunset Drive SafariLive Jamie answers a good question. Why snakes have such potent venom?

One of the J-twins is lying at the entrance to the den trying to catch flies. One of the Dec cubs comes out then the other J-twin and then other Dec cub with something in his mouth. Basically all the cute one. I could sit and watch and talk about these little guys for hours so here is a clip so you don't have to listen to me go on and on about them. Also since the screenshots are too dark.

(2016/03/20 18:20) Brent talks about Hyenas in folklore and history.He says that In Africa witches don’t ride brooms they run around on the backs of hyenas. I looked it up hoping to find a silly picture like we in America have of witches on broomsticks but didnt find and but here is a quote I found.
"In Tanzania, there is a belief that witches use spottedhyenas as mounts" copied from Wikipedia.

(2016/03/20 18:21) He then talks about an ivory carving. He shows us a picture of the Ivory Spotted hyena carving from 12 to 17 thousand years old south of France.

(2016/03/20 18:36) She sings the Swedish frog song. Great Jamie!! Love it! Gotta have a few silly moments, especially with James on leave who can be silly quite often. Aww now I miss James, oh no! and Scott!! *Sigh*
